Centerless Grinder

Centerless grinder is a very important machining method which uses rotating cutting tool to remove unwanted material from a work piece. This method is used not only in CNC mills but also in other machines. This type of machining method can be used either with or without a table. If the machine is operated at high speeds then the time taken to grind small piece becomes longer. There is a need for small grinding stones to keep the grinding speed equalized throughout the work piece.

Centerless Grinder

In this type of machining operation there is no stationary work piece. The work piece could be of any size. It could be as large as a table or it could be small like reel spindles. The work piece is moved by a hydraulic arm attached to the cutting wheel. This hydraulic arm is usually located on the top side of the grinding wheel and it rotates clockwise and anti clockwise to adjust the outside diameter of the work piece.

The purpose of the outside diameter of the work piece is to set the proper grinding distance. If the outside diameter of the part is too large, the machine will have to compensate by slowing down its rotation speed. This will lead to inaccurate part quality. In order to overcome this problem an electronic or hydraulic regulating wheel will be fitted to the grinding machine. The regulating wheel will detect the excessive outside diameter and will reduce or increase the speed of the grinding wheel accordingly.

There are two types of grinding systems used in the centerless grinder namely through-feed grinding and out-feed grinding. In through-feed grinding the work piece is passed through the machine using a slide. The work piece rotates inside the machine providing it with work piece friction. The work piece is therefore moved continuously within the machine and the whole operation is complete when the grinding wheel completely stops.

On the other hand out-feed grinding happens when the working piece is passed through the machine’s spindle at an angle. The work piece is in free motion until the grinding wheel strikes the workpiece at a predetermined angle. This method produces faster results and is preferred over through-feed grinding. CNC grinders that use the centerless design technology can produce precision results and provide high quality and consistency even when the distance between the two wheels is smaller than 2.5mm. This feature makes the centerless grinders popular among small and mid-sized machineries.

The main advantage of the CNC grinders over other types of grinders is that they produce a consistent result despite any variations in the distance between the two grinding wheels. Another advantage of the CNC grinder is that it can adjust its rotational speed based upon the type of workpiece being processed. It has the ability to generate a rounder result in the faceplate of the workplace or on the surface finish. Moreover, this type of grinder is capable of performing the task with much accuracy than the traditional round grinding wheels. The roundness of the workpiece can also be easily attained with the help of this type of grinder.
